5 Fall Outdoor Learning Activities for Preschoolers
Fall is a wonderful season for preschoolers to explore, learn, and connect with nature. Colourful leaves, cooler weather, and seasonal changes create plenty of opportunities to turn outdoor play into meaningful learning experiences.
For childcare educators, simple fall activities can encourage children to observe their surroundings, build new skills, and stay active—all while enjoying the fresh air.
Here are five easy fall outdoor learning activities to try with preschoolers this season.
1. Go on a Fall Nature Scavenger Hunt
Turn a regular outdoor walk into an exciting learning adventure. Create a simple list of fall items for children to find, such as:
A red, yellow, or orange leaf
A pinecone
A small stick
A smooth rock
An acorn or seed
Something soft
Something that smells interesting
Encourage children to look closely at their surroundings and talk about what they discover.
Learning opportunity: A nature scavenger hunt supports observation, vocabulary, colour recognition, and curiosity about the natural world.

2. Sort and Count Colourful Leaves
Collect fallen leaves during outdoor play and use them for a simple sorting activity.
Children can group the leaves by colour, size, shape, or type. Once they have created their groups, invite them to count how many leaves are in each one.
Try asking questions like:
“Which group has the most leaves?”
“Can you find the smallest leaf?”
“How many yellow leaves did we collect?”
Learning opportunity: Sorting and counting natural objects introduces early math concepts such as classification, comparison, patterns, and numbers.
3. Create Fall Nature Art
Nature can provide plenty of inspiration—and materials—for creative activities.
Invite children to collect safe fallen items such as leaves, small twigs, pinecones, and seeds. They can arrange their discoveries into pictures, patterns, faces, or other creative designs outdoors.
You can also bring some of the collected materials back to the classroom for leaf rubbings, collages, or seasonal crafts.
Learning opportunity: Nature art encourages creativity, fine motor development, decision-making, and sensory exploration.

4. Become Fall Weather Detectives
Fall weather can change quickly, making it a great time to introduce children to simple weather observations.
Before going outside, ask children what they notice. Is it sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, warm, or chilly?
During outdoor play, encourage them to look for clues. They might notice leaves moving in the wind, puddles after the rain, or how their clothing changes as the weather becomes cooler.
Educators can even create a simple daily weather chart and compare observations throughout the week.
Learning opportunity: Weather observation helps preschoolers understand seasonal changes while developing descriptive language and early science skills.

5. Take a Five-Senses Fall Walk
Encourage children to experience fall using all five senses.
Ask them:
What can you see? Colourful leaves, clouds, trees, or birds.
What can you hear? Leaves crunching, wind blowing, or birds calling.
What can you touch? A rough tree trunk, smooth rock, or dry leaf.
What can you smell? Fresh air, wet soil, or fallen leaves.
For taste, educators can continue the activity later with an appropriate supervised seasonal snack.
Learning opportunity: A sensory walk encourages children to slow down, observe their environment, and describe their experiences using new vocabulary.
Make the Most of Outdoor Learning This Fall
Outdoor learning doesn’t need to be complicated. A short walk around the playground, a handful of colourful leaves, or a windy afternoon can become an opportunity for preschoolers to explore science, math, language, creativity, and movement.
As the season changes, encourage children to ask questions, make observations, and share what they discover. These simple experiences can help make learning feel natural, playful, and memorable.

With thoughtful planning and communication, educators can make seasonal activities part of a well-organized classroom routine. Esikidz helps childcare centres manage classroom activities, communicate with families, and keep daily information organized—giving educators more time to focus on meaningful experiences with children.
